Free Health Insurance Registration for Sickle Cell Warriors

The Ikorodu Outreach Program was implemented to improve healthcare access for individuals living with sickle cell disorder through free health insurance registration. This initiative recognized that one of the biggest barriers to quality healthcare for sickle cell warriors is the cost of treatment, and sought to address this by enrolling warriors in the national health insurance scheme.

Sickle cell disease requires ongoing medical care, including regular check-ups, blood tests, medication, and sometimes hospitalization during crises. For many families, these costs are overwhelming, leading to delayed treatment and worsening health outcomes. By registering warriors for free health insurance, we aimed to remove this financial barrier and ensure that they can access the care they need when they need it.

The outreach was conducted in Ikorodu, a densely populated area of Lagos State with a significant population of sickle cell warriors. Our team worked with local community leaders and healthcare providers to identify individuals who would benefit from the program and facilitate their registration.

In addition to health insurance registration, the outreach included free medical check-ups, genotype testing, and counseling services. Healthcare professionals were available to conduct comprehensive health assessments and provide personalized advice on managing sickle cell disease.

Over 200 warriors were registered for free health insurance during the outreach, giving them access to covered medical services at participating hospitals and clinics. This means that these warriors can now receive regular check-ups, medication, and emergency care without the burden of out-of-pocket expenses.

This program represents a sustainable approach to supporting sickle cell warriors, as health insurance provides long-term access to healthcare rather than one-time interventions. We are working to expand this program to other communities across Nigeria.
