The Tiwa Sickle Cell Disease Foundation successfully organized a Free Sickle Cell Awareness and Screening Drive to raise awareness about sickle cell disease and provide free screening to community members. The drive was part of our ongoing efforts to promote early diagnosis and reduce the stigma associated with sickle cell disease.

The screening drive was set up in accessible community locations, making it easy for people to walk in and get tested. Our team of healthcare professionals conducted genotype testing using reliable and rapid testing methods, ensuring that participants received their results quickly and confidentially.

Each participant received counseling before and after the test, helping them understand what their genotype means and how it may affect their health and family planning decisions. For those who tested positive for sickle cell trait or disease, we provided information about management strategies and connected them with appropriate healthcare services.

The awareness component of the drive included educational materials, interactive sessions, and community engagement activities. We used this opportunity to dispel common myths about sickle cell disease, such as the belief that it is contagious or a curse, and replace them with accurate, science-based information.

The drive also emphasized the importance of knowing one's genotype before marriage, as this is one of the most effective ways to prevent the transmission of sickle cell disease to future generations. We provided premarital counseling services for couples, helping them understand the genetic implications of their genotype compatibility.

By the end of the drive, over 500 individuals had been screened, and thousands more had received life-saving information about sickle cell disease. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to early detection, education, and community empowerment.
